Google Pixel 6a to Receive Mandatory Android 16 Update to Address Battery Overheating

Google has announced a mandatory Android 16 update for the Pixel 6a, set to roll out starting July 8, 2025, aimed at resolving battery overheating issues. The update is part of Google's Battery Performance Programme, designed to enhance safety and battery management for affected devices.

Although the Pixel 6a was previously excluded from the Android 16 update, the new rollout will apply automatically to Pixel 6a units identified as “Impacted Devices.” This update will introduce crucial battery management features, including a reduction in battery capacity and charging performance after the phone reaches 400 charge cycles to minimize overheating risks.

Users with impacted Pixel 6a devices will receive reminder notifications once their phone approaches 375 charge cycles. Following the update, users may notice slower charging speeds and temporary fluctuations in the battery-level indicator as the device adjusts to the new capacity.

Pixel 6a owners affected by the Battery Performance Programme are eligible for free repairs. Alternatively, they can opt for cash compensation or receive discounts on future hardware purchases through the Google Store.

This update follows reports earlier this year of Pixel 6a battery problems, including incidents of swollen batteries and one alleged explosion, prompting Google to take swift action to protect users.
